Trauma and PTSD

Understanding the Story Behind the Symptoms

Working With the Mind and the Nervous System

Working With the Mind and the Nervous System

Our  approach to therapy is trauma-informed, meaning we look beyond the question of “What is wrong with me?” and begin asking, “What happened to me, and how has it shaped the way I experience myself, my relationships, and the world around me?”  Rather than simply trying to eliminate symptoms, We help clients develop a deeper understanding of the experiences that shaped their current patterns of thought, emotion, behavior, and relationships. Together, we work to reorganize the way those experiences are understood and integrated into your personal story. Developing this self-awareness can help reduce shame by separating who you are from what you have experienced. Patterns that may have once felt confusing, overwhelming, or even self-destructive can begin to make sense as adaptations that developed in response to earlier experiences. Understanding these patterns creates an opportunity to develop new ways of responding rather than continuing to feel controlled by the past. This process can also restore a sense of agency. Instead of seeing yourself only as someone who has been hurt or affected by what happened, therapy can help you recognize your capacity to make choices, develop new skills, establish healthier boundaries, and actively participate in your healing.

Trauma can also leave experiences feeling fragmented—sometimes stored as emotions, body sensations, beliefs, or reactions rather than as an organized narrative. Therapy can help connect these pieces, allowing you to better understand how the past may still be influencing the present.

Because trauma is experienced not only through thoughts and memories but also through the body and nervous system, we incorporate somatic and nervous-system-informed approaches into treatment. We may explore how stress, anxiety, trauma, and relational experiences show up physically and learn strategies for increasing regulation, safety, and awareness within the body.

Depending on your needs and treatment goals, We also utilize evidence-based approaches such as Mindfulness, EMDR, hypnosis, and biofeedback, integrating these methods with a broader therapeutic framework rather than relying on a single technique.

Our goal is not simply to help you understand your past. It is to help you understand how your past may be shaping your present—and develop the awareness, skills, and sense of agency to move beyond past conditioning to create forward movement with new patterns.
